Mountasia Family Fun Center
The address for Mountasia is 21516 Golden Triangle Road in Santa Clarita off of the 14 freeway. We drove up the 405 to the 5 and before you get into Valencia you will see the turn off to the 14 freeway which leads out to Palmdale and Lancaster. Santa Clarita is the first city you will come to. After exiting the freeway and a series of turns we came to a big shopping center that looks new. It had an enormous WalMart Supercenter and a Sam’s Club along with many other chain-type businesses. Just after this area is where you’ll find Mountasia.
The hours for Mountasia are Monday-Thursday from 12- 9 pm, Friday 12-11 pm, Saturday from 10 am-11 pm and Sunday 11 am- 9 pm. There is a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor which serves food and ice cream onsite. Farrell’s hours differ slightly from Mountasia’s on the weekends.
There is no cost for admission into Mountasia, however there are no free attractions. The facility has a large arcade with games that require tokens and many spit out tickets based on your performance. There is a large ticket redemption area with many prizes. Inside the arcade you will also find a huge rock wall to climb. Beyond the arcade there are bumper boats, go-karts, a lazer tag zone, a batting cage and a miniature golf course.
The cost for the attractions is varied. For three hours of unlimited play at the go-karts, bumper boats and miniature golf it is $20. For three hours of unlimited play at all attractions excluding the batting cage it is $30. Each attraction can also be purchased separately. Children 3 and younger play miniature golf for free. Also, be sure to note that some of the arcade games require tokens and other require a Mountasia Fun Card.
If you have an Entertainment coupon book that is sold at major bookstores and through many school fundraisers, LAwithKids encourages you to check for a Mountasia coupon. The 2011 san fernando valley edition has some great discounts to the core Mountasia attractions.
We first started at the bumper boats which is what my kids were most excited about when we looked at all the attractions online the night before visiting Mountasia. There is a height requirement for rising the boats alone which my son met but my daughter did not (44 inches). In order to ride the boats at all, children need to be 40 inches and ride with an adult. We picked out our boats, sized up the other kids and parents who were climbing in and we were off. The boats move in circles or straight in any direction, but the coolest part is that they also spray water. We got really wet and the kids were laughing the whole time. I wish it had been a little warmer, but even so we dried off pretty quickly. We then walked over to the go karts.
The course has many twists, turns and a couple of hills. The height requirement here is that children must be 42” to ride with an adult and 58” to ride independently. The karts are not difficult to drive and really get up to a good speed. The kids and my husband did it a few times and I never saw anyone crash into each other or into the sides. If your kids are scared (mine were so excited, loved it and would have done it 10 times each if they could) then you can always go slower and stay on the outside of the track and allow the fast cars to pass you. Compared to Disneyland’s autopia this ride wins out. No long lines. No tracks. And you could easily ride it several times in your visit.
The go karts were awesome and really gave them a thrill! I think it was a fun experience for them and I know they will want to go back and do it again. They were also intrigued by the kids who were maybe 10 years old and could drive by themselves.
After going once more on the boats they both wanted to try miniature golf. One of the two courses has a putt-through cave and there is also a huge waterfall on the course! It was a great experience watching them run around and try the different holes to see how well they could do.
We then wandered around the arcade. It was quite large and there was truly something for everyone in it from a small carousel to a rock wall, which was awesome. We recently went to a birthday party at Boulderdash in Thousand Oaks and both of my kids really took quickly to the activity so I think 5 is a great age to start doing rock wall climbing with kids. The arcade had so many games to choose from! There was skeeball, air hockey, basketball plus dozens of stand up-video games and other games for young kids like the kind you’d see at Chuck E Cheese.
After checking out the Arcade we then went into Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour which is in the same structure as the arcade.
My husband and I have many fond memories of Farrell’s locations in LA but while they almost disappeared it has been reincarntaed in Santa Clarita at Mountasia. You can get freshly scooped ice cream, french fries are sold by the pound and there is a huge candy selection. The restaurant was doing a great business and is definitely large enough to host parties if you want to have lunch plus enjoy Mountasia’s attractions. While we saw the famous drum that traditionally gets played at birthday, but we did not see a birthday party during our visit to Farrells that day.
